"A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world".

John 16:21.

Mothers give joy and hope to a child. The affection and nurturing of the child is not to be overlooked. From the feeding of the child from their tender breasts, to patting their babies to sleep. From bathing and dressing the child, to the midnight sleeplessness when they hear the cry of their babies. It’s no wonder the first word the comes out of the mouth of most children is “mama”.

Mothers put in so much efforts in their own way to ensuring their kids are safe and protected. And not only in the human institution, but this is also evident in the animal kingdom. A clear example is when the hen covers her chicks with her wings when she senses danger from predators. Mothers are truly a blessing.

But in as much as mothers do all these, the mother tag has been misused over the years. Some women don’t nurture their kids and shape them to becoming better human beings despite being alive and yet want to be celebrated and called mothers. Should everyone be called a mother? The answer rests in your hands.

Celebrating people who don’t deserve to be celebrated on a special occasion such as Mother’s Day is highly disrespectful and has gradually made this special occasion lose its value, despite still being relevant.

The fact that you’ve given birth to a child doesn’t qualify you to be a mother. Many are who neglect their wards and yet still, wants to be celebrated because they brought their children to the surface of the earth.

Many children as they are through the years because they didn’t have this motherly love, tends to despise women because of how they were treated by their mothers.

Others have turned wayward and are engaging in activities they shouldn’t involve themselves in due to their mothers neglecting them.

But hold up. There’s a twist to this. There are mothers who are there for their wards and yet don’t deserve to be called mothers. These women push their children to engage in activities that put their children at risk.

Driving your children into prostitution, hookups, fraudulent activities, and making them engage in social vices doesn’t qualify you to be called a mother.

These may sound like a movie script because generally no mother will push their children to engage in these things in their presence. But unfortunately, these women do and that’s the reason they shouldn’t be celebrated and called mothers.

Many are who have engaged in drugs, prostitution, fraud and other social vices either because they lacked the love of a mother or because they were pressurized by the people they call mothers to engage in them for survival.

Many are whose lives have been wasted when they had so much potential. Many are who were destined to become presidents, ministers, and prominent personalities who would have given light and hope to others. But due to the misguidance of the people who bore them, they have turned into ragamuffins and a threat to society.

Should everyone be called a mother because they brought a child to this world? Or should the mother tag be given to those who really deserve it?

It’s high time we distinguish between child bearers and mothers and give reverence to whom reverence is due. For everyone can bear a child but not everyone can mother a child. It’s like purchasing a car. The fact that you own a car, doesn’t mean you can drive the car.

Many are who have given birth. But few are mothers. For many are just ‘motherless mothers’.
